From Talk to Action: Presenting OSRC’s AI projects at ESCRS 2025

Thrilled to have designed/presented a landmark session at the ESCRS Conference—the first of its kind in the region and only the second worldwide dedicated to AI in surgery.

We showcased three “home-grown” OSRC projects, offering what I called “fresh, fibre-rich food for thought” for the surgical community:

1.      Automated Performance Metrics: A live proof-of-concept demonstrated our software for real-time video analysis of laparoscopic surgery. This collaborative effort (Denmark, Norway, Pakistan) turns surgery into quantifiable data.

2.      Data-Driven Surgical Modelling: We presented our ambitious, long-term project to model surgical intervention, sharing the key milestones we’ve already achieved on this complex journey.

3.      LLMs for Guideline Analysis: We unveiled a novel application using Large Language Models to intelligently analyse surgical guidelines. The project, now under peer review, generated significant enthusiasm.

While many just talk about AI, at OSRC, we are building it.

This is just the beginning. I am excited to connect with fellow surgeons who are interested in the future of our field. Let’s collaborate to turn these ideas into clinical reality.

A sincere thanks to Sara Al Bastaki who suggested the idea of holding this session and the ESCRS team who supported the idea
