This edition of the OSRC newsletter reflects what our organisation stands for: independence,
opportunity, and
academic excellence.

We begin with an important reminder that OSRC’s independence is sustained by its members. As a non-profit organisation, our work — from website infrastructure to research support — is funded entirely through annual subscriptions. Your contribution keeps the platform operational and ensures that high-quality academic guidance remains available to the community.

This issue also presents several outstanding international opportunities:

A call to represent OSRC on the Young BJS Board through our partnership with the BJS Foundation
The BJS–OSRC session at the conference of the Egyptian Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, offering abstract presentation, publication opportunities, and a €1,000 award

In addition, we continue advancing the discussion on artificial intelligence in surgery. Following strong engagement at our previous international session, OSRC will host a dedicated AI session in collaboration with the Romanian Society of Coloproctology, focusing on responsible and practical implementation in research and clinical practice.

Together, these initiatives demonstrate a clear direction: expanding international collaboration, strengthening academic skills and creating tangible professional opportunities.

Your Subscription Keeps the OSRC Website Running

The OSRC is a non-profit organisation. We are fully independent from the academic and medical industry. This independence is one of our greatest strengths — but it also means we rely entirely on our members for financial support.

Membership fees cover essential running costs, including website hosting, maintenance, and payment processing. The annual fee for full membership is 50 USD — roughly the cost of one restaurant meal.

We often receive requests from individuals with free subscriptions who expect comprehensive support for their research, from initial idea through to publication. High-quality guidance requires time, expertise, and administrative infrastructure. As a non-profit organisation, we cannot sustainably provide this level of support without financial contributions from our members.

OSRC is built by its members and exists for its members. If you value the support, network, and independence we provide, please help us continue our work by contributing the equivalent of one restaurant meal per year.

Research Forum in Qatar with Remarkable Impact

Although this was the first annual research meeting of the team, the event was impressively well organized and thoughtfully planned.

Sidra is a medical center dedicated to pediatric care, and the Annual Research Forum was designed to showcase ongoing research activities while providing a valuable platform for scientific exchange and networking.

OSRC team was truly impressed by the motivation of the young researchers and the talent and experience of the scientists I had the pleasure to meet. The breadth of expertise was remarkable — from nanotechnology specialists and genetic researchers to bioinformatics experts and senior research administrators with strong strategic visions.

The region harbours extraordinary talents.

BJS–OSRC Session at the Conference of the Egyptian Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons

The BJS–OSRC session, to be held during the annual conference of the Egyptian Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (26–28 August 2026), offers researchers worldwide the opportunity to present their work in a high-impact scientific forum.
Five outstanding abstracts will be selected for presentation during the session. These abstracts will be considered for publication in either the British Journal of Surgery (BJS) or BJS Open.

In addition, the best abstract will receive a €1,000 award in recognition of excellence in surgical research. The winning project may be submitted for publication in BJS or BJS Open.

For researchers seeking international visibility, academic recognition, and collaboration with leading surgical scientists, the BJS–OSRC session represents an excellent opportunity.

OSRC Representative to the Young BJS Board

Our partner, the BJS Foundation, is offering OSRC members an exciting new opportunity: to join the Young BJS Board.

The Young BJS Board consists of early-career and trainee surgeons who curate and develop content for the Young BJS section of the BJS Academy website. Board members are expected to be actively engaged in producing high-quality content and advancing new initiatives.
The role includes a monthly virtual meeting, as well as additional contributions throughout the month.

OSRC has been invited to appoint one representative to this board. This is a valuable opportunity to expand your professional network, contribute internationally, and gain editorial and leadership experience.

AI-Dedicated Session at the Romanian Surgical Conference

OSRC, in collaboration with the Romanian Society of Coloproctology, will host a dedicated session on artificial intelligence during the Congress of the Romanian Society of Coloproctology (15–17 April 2026, Constanța, Black Sea coast).

Following the strong engagement at our previous AI session in Dubai, this event will focus on practical implementation of AI in surgical research and clinical practice.
The session will include:

Presentation of OSRC’s recent research on AI in surgery
Real-world use cases
A panel discussion addressing validation, ethics, bias, and responsible integration

The goal is clear: move beyond the hype and provide surgeons with a structured, critical understanding of how AI can be used safely and effectively.

We look forward to continuing the discussion in Constanța.

Contribute Educational Content to Collabwith Academy – and Get Paid

OSRC has been invited to contribute educational materials to the Collabwith Academy.

This creates a paid opportunity for OSRC members. Interested members can sign an individual contract directly with Collabwith, agreeing on:
• The type of educational material (e.g. webinar, workshop, training module)
• The pricing model and estimated download fee
Each time your material is purchased or downloaded, you receive payment according to your agreement.

OSRC does not receive any financial compensation from this arrangement. Our role is simply to facilitate opportunities for our members.

“How to Write a Manuscript” – Online Postgraduate Course (Funded Place Available)

OSRC has the opportunity to nominate one member for the part-time, online postgraduate course “How to Write a Manuscript.”

This academically rigorous programme is delivered by the University of Edinburgh in partnership with the BJS Institute. One OSRC nominee will receive financial support from the BJS Foundation to participate in this accredited course.
Course Commitment
• Duration: September – October 2026
• Workload: Minimum 20 hours per week (total 100 hours)
• Active weekly engagement with learning activities and assessment is mandatory. Insufficient participation may result in withdrawal or failure.

Eligibility Requirements
• Academic qualification: Medical degree or UK 2:1 honours degree (or international equivalent) in healthcare, medical writing, publishing, or a related field
• English proficiency: Must meet the University of Edinburgh language requirements (English test may be required if not a first language)
• Application deadline: Nominees must begin their application no later than Monday, 27 April
To ensure eligibility and minimise the risk of withdrawal, selected nominees will need to submit documentation for early review before formally starting their application.
